Beltane, Mayday - 1st May
The Earth Spirit and the Maiden

At Beltane young people stay out in the woods all night conjouring summer in by gathering mayflowers and doing what comes naturally to young couples. As the sun rises they will return to the village green, to weave coloured ribbons around the Maypole in the traditional dances which celebrate the return of Summer, bringing with it renewed warmth, light and life.
Crowned with bluebells and mayflowers, the Maiden united with the Earth Spirit of the forest in a kiss. Watching on in approval, the Green Man symbolises the mystical relationship of humankind with the land.
